Hassle-free auto-turnaround feature
CommFront's RS232 to RS485
/ RS232 to RS422
converters come with the auto-turnaround feature. Upon sensing a
"start bit" (a logic high "Mark" to low "Space" transition) from its
RS232 data transmit line (TxD), the RS485 transceiver circuit will
automatically change the data direction so that the RS485 side is in "listening" mode, thus reducing the chance of data
collusion. The auto-turnaround feature eliminates the need of using flow
control and/or software drivers; therefore, it is very useful for
half-duplex RS485 communications.
Note: Auto-turnaround feature is
not applicable to full-duplex communications such as RS232, RS422,
and TTL, because full-duplex communications consist of two channels:
TX (Transmitting) and RX (Receiving), and both channels can operate
simultaneously.

Plug-and-play with full circuit protection
CommFront's
RS232 to RS422 converter products come with the
auto-sensing and self-adjusting features, which automatically adjust
baud rate, parity, stop bit and other COM port parameters to the
devices that they are connected to.
The converters are hot-pluggable and are equipped with 600W surge
protection, 15kV ESD protection, and additional circuit protection,

Port- or externally-powered converters for all types of applications
Most of the RS232
ports come with a -3 to -15VDC port power, which is the reason why
port-powered converters are so popular. However,
because port-powered converters require a minimum of +/-5VDC
from the RS232 port, there may be insufficient port power
(especially when there are too many RS422 devices connected to a
single RS422 bus), which could cause data errors. Most of our port-powered
RS232 to RS422 converters, such as CVT-422-1, CVT-485_422-1, CVT-422-3, and CVT-485_422-3, accept external 5VDC input, which
solves this problem
effectively. And in
case there is no port power at all from the
RS232 port, the externally-powered RS232 to
RS422 converter (CVT-485_422-4) can be used.

Non-isolated or opto-isolated for both "clean" and "noisy" environments
A "noisy" environment is
an area
surrounded by ground loops, transient surges,
remote lightning and spikes, which could potentially harm your expensive
equipment such as computers and data communication
devices.

potential harms.
Opto-isolators pass light instead
of electrical signals between two serial devices, thus breaking the
electrical path and protecting serial devices from
transient
surges, lightning, and spikes induced by a device on the other side.
Opto-isolators
also eliminate ground loop and noise problems
because the grounds of two connected devices are separated.

selectable 120-Ohm and 5VDC input
Most of our RS232 to RS422 converters
come with an ALL-IN-ONE rugged terminal block professionally
designed for different requirements, such as:

the selectable 120-Ohm
end-of-line terminator jumper, which is important for reducing noise and
reflections when the RS485's distance exceeds 660ft (200m) or when
the baud rate is above 19.2kbps.
-
the optional external 5VDC input,
which is useful for solving the potential problem of
insufficient port power. For example, some COM ports, such as
USB-RS232 ports, come with an insufficient port power that is
less than +/-5VDC, connect a regulated 5VDC power supply to the
+5V input in such a case.

and the TX, RX, and GND inputs for shielded twisted-pair
cables such as CAT-5e cables.
Note: The ALL-IN-ONE rugged and
hassle-free terminal block eliminates the need of using different
types of terminal blocks.
