The CVT-232A-3
is a
compact, rugged, industrial-grade,
port-powered, 3-wire RS-232 Isolator. The unit
optically isolates
three (3) RS-232 lines (TX, RX and GND), which effectively
protects your RS-232 devices from
ground
loops, noise problems, transient surges, remote lightning and spikes.
This
industrial 3-wire RS232 isolator
provides a
5000Vrms (AC, 1min) optical isolation. It operates within a
temperature range of -40ºF to 185ºF (-40ºC to 85ºC),
and features 600W surge protection and 15kV static
protection. The unit is efficiently powered from the RS232 data line,
it requires no external power or software drivers, making
the unit a highly reliable and truly plug-and-play
device and an ideal solution for all types of installations.

TROUBLESHOOTING 3-WIRE RS232
OPTO-ISOLATOR
Loopback Test

- Connect the female
connector end of the isolator to your PC’s COM port and
connect the other end (male connector) to another of
your PC’s COM ports with a null-modem converter (or
connect pin 2 to 3, pin 3 to 2, and pin 5 to 5 between
the male connector and your PC's RS232 connector) (as
shown above).
- Run two instances
of the
232Analyzer FREE
version software on your computer.

Select "ASCII" for both the Send and Receive data
formats. Then send command and/or string such as
"CommFront" from one COM port. You should receive an
echo of the command/string sent ("CommFront") on the
other COM port. By performing a simple loopback test
like this, you can test both the transmitter and
receiver of the isolator. This is very helpful when you
are in doubt about the performance of your isolator.
